Lignosulfonate powder is a dry, transportable form of lignin-derived anionic polymers used as dispersants, binders, plasticizing components and process aids in selected industrial systems. “Lignosulfonate powder” is not one uniform grade: calcium, sodium and magnesium salts—and grades within each family—can differ in composition, solubility, moisture, sugars, salts, insolubles, particle size and application response.

Why choose powder instead of liquid?

Calcium, sodium and magnesium grades
The counter-ion can affect formulation balance, but it does not by itself predict performance. Sodium lignosulfonate grades are frequently evaluated for dispersion and construction uses; calcium grades for conventional plasticizing, binding and dust-control systems; magnesium grades for selected industrial formulations. These are general starting points, not universal assignments.
Compare molecular distribution, charge-related behaviour, reducing sugars, inorganic components and insolubles when they matter to the process. Test the offered commercial grade rather than extrapolating from a generic chemical name.
Industrial selection by application
- Concrete and cement: measure flow, water demand, setting, air and strength with the actual cement system.
- Ceramics and minerals: measure slurry viscosity, sedimentation, filtration and green-body properties.
- Granulation and binding: measure granule strength, fines, abrasion, drying and moisture response.
- Dust control: assess dissolution, application equipment, surface binding and weathering under site conditions.
- Pigment or other dispersions: assess particle size, viscosity, colour, foam and storage stability; formulation auxiliaries may fall under the Group’s surface-technology division.
Specification and COA review
Application-relevant parameters may include moisture, pH, water insolubles, reducing sugars, ash or specified ions, bulk density and particle size. There is no universal purity or molecular-weight requirement for all lignosulfonate powders. Ask which parameters are tested on every batch and which are typical information only.
Recommended trial and scale-up
- Define the function and test method before choosing the salt or grade.
- Screen a supplier-recommended trial range in the actual process medium.
- Check compatibility with salts, cationic additives, cement admixtures or other formulation components.
- Measure both immediate performance and storage or ageing stability.
- Confirm a pilot or first commercial lot before full conversion.
Powder handling and packaging
Confirm bag liner, closure, pallet protection, lot coding, shelf life and warehouse conditions. Use dust-control and personal-protection measures stated in the SDS. Evaluate flow and feeding on the actual screw, hopper or pneumatic system, because bulk density and particle size influence handling.
Requesting an industrial recommendation
Provide the application, preferred salt if known, process pH, water chemistry, solids, temperature, test target, destination, packaging and order quantity. Request the current TDS, SDS, representative COA and a sample before scale-up.
