Product Description
Dispersant MF is the sodium salt of a methylnaphthalene sulfonate formaldehyde condensate. It is an anionic dispersant supplied as a dark brown, water-soluble powder. It is used mainly as a dispersant and filler in the manufacture of disperse and vat dyes, where its high-temperature dispersion stability is the key property. Despite the similar abbreviation, it is not a melamine-formaldehyde product (see SMF superplasticizer).
Main Specification: GAC-MF industrial grade
Typical values from the current TDS and SDS. Batch results are on the shipment COA.
| Item | GAC-MF |
|---|---|
| Appearance | Dark brown powder |
| Composition | Methylnaphthalene sulfonate formaldehyde condensate, sodium salt |
| Ion type | Anionic |
| CAS No. (per GAC-MF SDS) | 9084-06-4 |
| Thermal stability (C.I. Disperse Blue 79, 130 °C) | Grade 4–5 |
| Sodium sulphate | 5% max |
| pH (1% solution) | 7–9 |
| Water-insoluble matter | 0.05% max |
| Calcium and magnesium ions | 4000 ppm max |
The thermal-stability grade is an application test with one dye at 130 °C, not a chemical assay. When comparing suppliers, ask for the test method and check stability with your own dye and temperature profile.
Properties
- Soluble in water, and tolerant of acid, alkali, hard water and inorganic salts.
- Low foaming; works as a dispersant and protective colloid rather than a penetrant.
- Affinity for protein and polyamide fibres, but not for cotton or linen.
- Compatible with anionic and non-ionic surfactants; do not combine with cationic dyes or surfactants.
- Hygroscopic: keep bags closed and dry.
Applications
| Application | Role |
|---|---|
| Disperse and vat dye manufacture | Grinding aid, dispersant and filler during milling and standardisation |
| High-temperature polyester dyeing | Keeps disperse dye dispersed in the bath |
| Pigments and printing preparations | Dispersant for aqueous pigment pastes |
| Wettable powder pesticides | Dispersant; test suspensibility with the active |
| Concrete | Listed on the TDS as a high-range water reducer; compare with SNF in your cement and mix design |
| Rubber latex, leather auxiliaries, ceramics, paper, carbon black, oil drilling, water treatment | Dispersant or stabiliser; qualify in the actual system |
Use levels depend on the dye, active or pigment and on the process. Establish them by laboratory trial against your current dispersant on an equal active basis.
Packaging
25 kg plastic woven bag with plastic lining; other packaging on request. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area. Non-flammable.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is MF chemical?
In dispersant trade, MF is Dispersant MF: a methylnaphthalene sulfonate formaldehyde condensate, sodium salt (CAS 9084-06-4), sold as a dark brown powder.
Is Dispersant MF the same as melamine formaldehyde?
No. Dispersant MF is naphthalene-based. The melamine-based product used in concrete is SMF, sulfonated melamine formaldehyde.
What is Dispersant MF used for?
Mainly as a dispersant and filler for disperse, vat and reactive dyes, including high-temperature dyeing; also in wettable-powder pesticides and other dispersions.
What is the difference between Dispersant MF and NNO?
Both are naphthalene sulfonate formaldehyde condensates. MF is based on methylnaphthalene and is specified for thermal stability at 130 °C, which suits high-temperature disperse dyeing.
