Sodium lignosulphonate (also spelled sodium lignosulfonate) is the sodium-counter-ion form of a water-compatible, anionic lignin-derived polymer mixture. Industrial grades may be screened as dispersants, binders, rheology modifiers or processing aids, but the correct application depends on grade composition, substrate and process conditions—not on the product name alone.
This guide focuses on matching sodium-grade variables to industrial applications. For the broader cross-counter-ion application map, see Lignosulfonate Applications: Industrial Selection and Testing Guide.
Where the Sodium Form May Be Evaluated
| Application | Function to screen | Sodium-grade variables | Required validation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Concrete and mortar | Conventional water reduction, plasticizing or set modification. | Reducing sugars, salts, chloride, moisture/solids and interaction with cement. | Workability over time, air, setting, bleeding, strength and project durability. |
| Ceramics and refractories | Slurry dispersion, green binding or processing rheology. | Molecular distribution, charge, insolubles, colour, pH and ash. | Viscosity, casting, drying, green strength and fired quality. |
| Mineral processing and granulation | Dispersion, binding, agglomeration or dust management. | Particle surface, electrolyte compatibility, form and solids basis. | Rheology, filtration, pellet strength, abrasion and downstream recovery. |
| Drilling fluids | Rheology and filtration support in a defined water-based system. | Salinity, hardness, pH, temperature, salts and regulatory requirements. | Rheology, filtration, contamination response and thermal aging. |
| Industrial binders | Wet adhesion, green strength and film formation after drying. | Moisture, viscosity, sugars, inorganic content and particle packing. | Mixing, shaping, green strength, drying, abrasion and thermal process. |
Why Sodium Is Not Automatically the Best Counter-Ion
Sodium grades are often readily water compatible, but calcium or magnesium grades may provide a different inorganic profile or process response. Counter-ion is only one selection variable. Feedstock, molecular distribution, degree of sulfonation, sugars, ash, salts, insolubles and manufacturing consistency can outweigh a simple sodium-versus-calcium label.
Compare candidate grades with compatible analytical methods and on an equal dry-solids basis. For liquid products, correct formulation water and verify density if dosing volumetrically.
Documents to Review Before a Trial

- moisture/solids, pH, insolubles, reducing sugars, ash and controlled salts;
- declared methods, limits versus typical values, and sample preparation;
- recommended application basis and document revision;

Legacy Claims Requiring Verification
| Former page claim | Status | Missing evidence | Buyer use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10–15% reduction or saving in concrete components | Unverified and ambiguously worded | Exact material, dosage basis, control mix, consistency, test method and result. | Not a product specification or recommended dosage. |
| Panel toxicity reduced by up to 50% | Unsupported safety/performance claim | Panel formulation, hazardous constituent, emissions/toxicology method and study. | Do not infer safety or regulatory compliance. |
| Mineral-wool panels become stronger and waterproof | Unsupported universal result | Grade, binder system, control, strength and water-resistance methods. | Requires product-specific panel testing. |
| Hardens wells, mine materials and ground systems | Technically unclear | Defined process, mechanism, formulation and field evidence. | Quarantined from application claims. |

Application Trial Workflow
- Define substrate, solids, water, pH, temperature, process equipment and target response.
- Select exact-grade candidates from current documentation.
- Prepare an untreated or current-additive control.
- Screen several additions on a declared dry-solids, active or as-supplied basis.
- Measure the primary response and application-specific side effects.
- Validate at plant or field scale and establish incoming-lot acceptance controls.
A numeric addition may be presented as a supplier-recommended starting trial range only when the exact grade, document revision and calculation basis are identified. It remains subject to customer validation.
