This page provides a practical qualification procedure for calcium lignosulfonate in a specific cement and concrete mix.
Why a Compatibility Trial Is Required
Calcium lignosulfonate is a conventional water-reducing and set-modifying admixture. Its result varies with cement mineralogy, fineness, supplementary cementitious materials, aggregate moisture, temperature, mixing sequence and other admixtures. A dosage that works in one mix cannot be transferred automatically to another.
Recommended Screening Range
The Green Agrochem GAC-CaLS-Construction TDS recommends a starting range of 0.8–2.0% by weight of cement. The same TDS reports water reduction of up to 12% under suitable test conditions. These are grade-specific reference values, not guaranteed results for every concrete mix. Higher dosage may cause excessive retardation.
Step-by-Step Trial Matrix
- Prepare a control mix without calcium lignosulfonate.
- Test at least three dosages within the recommended range on equal cementitious-material basis.
- Keep aggregate grading, moisture correction, mixing time and temperature constant.
- Adjust water only according to the planned comparison method; record actual water/cement ratio.
- Repeat the preferred dosage with the complete commercial admixture combination.
Measurements to Record
| Stage | Recommended observations |
|---|---|
| Fresh concrete | Slump or flow, air content, density, temperature, bleeding and finishability. |
| Time response | Slump retention and initial/final setting behavior. |
| Hardened concrete | Early and later compressive strength, surface condition and durability tests required by the project. |
| Production | Batch repeatability, dosing accuracy and sensitivity to cement or moisture changes. |
Compatibility Warning Signs
- Unexpected air entrainment or rapid air loss.
- Excessive set delay, bleeding or segregation.
- Insufficient water reduction at the required workability.
- Loss of early strength or unstable performance with another admixture.
