Dispersant NNO for Concrete Water Reducer

Chart of ASTM C494 classes with naphthalene sulfonate (NNO/SNF) test data

Dispersant NNO is primarily marketed for dispersion applications. Although naphthalene-sulfonate chemistry is related to some concrete superplasticizers, an NNO dye-dispersant grade should not be assumed to meet concrete-admixture requirements. Concrete use requires a grade specifically specified, tested and supplied for cementitious systems.

Required Qualification

Confirm chemical identity, active solids, sulfate, chloride, pH, insoluble matter and relevant admixture compliance. Test slump, water demand, air, bleeding, setting, early and later strength, and compatibility with cement and other admixtures.

Do Not Substitute by Name

Dispersant NNO, SNF/PNS superplasticizer and other naphthalene condensates can have different molecular distribution and specifications. No fixed water reduction or dosage should be claimed without concrete test data.

Grade A Data for Screening

The reference NNO grade is a brown powder with minimum 95% active content and dispersing power, maximum 5% sodium sulfate, pH 7–9, maximum 0.4% calcium and magnesium, and approximately 0.05% insoluble matter. Use the shipment COA for release decisions.

Trial Sequence

  1. Prepare a control with identical raw materials and water.
  2. Screen several low additions selected by the formulator.
  3. Measure flow, air, setting and strength.
  4. Check compatibility before plant use.

Supplied in 25 kg lined bags; stated shelf life is 24 months unopened.
