Road Maintenance & Dust Control Additives

For roads and yards, lignosulfonate is used as a spray-on dust suppressant and surface binder, and in some projects as an emulsifier for asphalt or bitumen emulsions. The dust control choice is mainly calcium or sodium, liquid or powder; the emulsion choice is an emulsifier grade.

Which grade for which step?

Each row lists the first grade we suggest for a trial, the values that matter on its technical data sheet, and an alternative.

Process stepWhat the additive doesFirst choiceKey TDS valuesAlternative
Unpaved and gravel roadsBinds surface fines and keeps them in place under trafficCalcium lignosulfonate dust control liquidSolids 45–55%; lignosulfonate 45% min (liquid basis); pH 4.0–7.0; density approx. 1.20–1.28 g/cm³Sodium lignosulfonate dust control liquid (solids 45% min, Brix 50% min)
Mine haul roadsSame job under heavier traffic and longer intervals between treatmentsCalcium or sodium dust control liquidAs above; confirm solids and lignosulfonate content on the COA of each lotCalcium lignosulfonate dust control powder dissolved on site where freight to the mine is costly
Construction access roads and yardsShort-term dust reduction on temporary surfacesCalcium lignosulfonate dust control grade (powder)Dry matter 95% min; lignosulfonate 55% min; water-insoluble matter 1.0% maxSodium lignosulfonate dust control powder
Asphalt and bitumen emulsionSupports emulsification and emulsion stabilitySodium lignosulfonate emulsifier gradeDry matter 95% min; lignosulfonate 70% min (dry basis); water-insoluble matter 0.5% maxCalcium lignosulfonate emulsifier grade (total solids 95% min, pH 4–9)

Values are from the current TDS of each grade. Batch results are stated on the COA supplied with each shipment.

How to choose between grades

Liquid or powder?

Liquid dust control grades (45–55% solids) go straight into a water truck after dilution. Powders (95% dry matter) cut freight roughly in half for the same active amount but must be dissolved first. Choose by distance to site and the equipment available.

Calcium, sodium or ammonium?

Calcium liquids are the usual choice for roads. Sodium grades suit sites where added calcium is unwanted. An ammonium lignosulfonate dust control powder is also available (lignosulfonate 50% min, total nitrogen 3–5%); check whether added nitrogen is acceptable for run-off on your site.

Why compare the COA, not only the TDS?

Dust control performance follows the solids and lignosulfonate content actually delivered. Ask for the COA of each lot and dilute to the same active content when you compare suppliers.

What to send us for a grade recommendation

  • Road type and traffic (vehicles per day, vehicle weight)
  • Surface material and fines content
  • Climate: rainfall and dry-season length
  • Spray equipment (water truck, distributor) and tank sizes
  • Target interval between treatments
  • Volume per season and packing (IBC, flexitank, bags)

Frequently asked questions

Which lignosulfonate is best for unpaved road dust control?

A calcium lignosulfonate dust control liquid is the usual first choice (solids 45–55%, lignosulfonate 45% min on liquid basis). Sodium dust control liquid is the alternative where calcium is not wanted.

Is lignosulfonate washed off by rain?

It is water-soluble, so heavy rain can reduce the treated layer and re-application may be needed. Plan the treatment interval with your local rainfall.

Liquid or powder for a remote site?

Powder carries 95% dry matter against 45–55% solids for liquids, so it lowers freight for the same active amount. You need a tank and mixer to dissolve it before spraying.

How much do I apply?

Set the rate by a trial section on your own road. It depends on surface material, traffic and climate, so we do not publish one fixed rate.

Ask for TDS, SDS and a grade recommendation

Send your process details and we will reply with the grades to trial and their documents.
