Lignosulfonates are used as leather tanning and processing auxiliaries, where their dispersing and bonding properties support formulation compatibility in the tan liquor. Buyers should confirm pH, color influence, dosage, solubility, and compatibility with other tanning chemicals using the current TDS/SDS for the specific grade before bulk sourcing.
How lignosulfonate functions in tanning
Lignosulfonate’s suitability as a tanning auxiliary comes from its ability to bond with skin proteins. This bonding mechanism differs from that of vegetable tannins, which bind with skin proteins primarily through two mechanisms: coordination bonding (hydrogen bonding between the tannin’s phenolic structures and the peptide groups of skin proteins) and saline bonding (ionic bonding between the tannin and amino groups of skin proteins). Lignosulfonate bonds with skin proteins in a more limited way than vegetable tannins and therefore cannot fully replace vegetable tanning agents on its own.
Because of their differing bonding mechanisms, lignosulfonate and vegetable tanning agents can complement each other in a tanning formulation — lignosulfonate is commonly used alongside vegetable tannins rather than as a complete substitute, and can support more even uptake of the tanning liquor by the skin substance.
Reported reductions in vegetable tanning agent usage when lignosulfonate is included in the formulation vary by leather type, tanning process, and dosage — any specific percentage reduction should be confirmed through formulation trials with your specific process rather than assumed as a universal figure.
Grade selection and documentation
Different lignosulfonate grades vary in calcium and iron content, which can affect performance and color outcome in tanning applications. Request the current technical data sheet (TDS) and certificate of analysis (COA) for the specific grade under consideration, and confirm compatibility with your existing tanning chemical system through trial formulation before adopting into production.
