Lignosulfonate can be evaluated as a dispersing, wetting or binding aid in selected architectural ceramic bodies, including tiles, bricks, pavers and related clay-based products. It is not a universal replacement for every deflocculant or binder — performance must be demonstrated with the actual minerals, process water, forming method and firing cycle.
Where It Can Be Evaluated in the Process
| Production stage | Possible technical function | Measurements |
|---|---|---|
| Slurry preparation | Particle wetting and dispersion | Viscosity, flow, solids loading, residue and foam |
| Spray drying or granulation | Granule formation and binder distribution | Moisture, granule-size distribution, flow and bulk density |
| Pressing or extrusion | Binding, lubrication and forming support | Compaction, release, lamination, green density and edge quality |
| Green-body handling | Particle cohesion | Green strength, abrasion, chipping and handling losses |
| Drying and firing | Controlled removal of water and organic material | Shrinkage, cracking, color, black core, pinholes and final strength |
Dispersion and Binding Are Separate Objectives
A dosage that gives the lowest slurry viscosity may not provide the best green strength, and a higher binder addition may increase organic burnout demand. Test dispersion and binding performance separately before selecting a compromise condition — do not assume that one grade can optimize every process stage.
Recommended Plant Trial Design
- Record the control formulation, water quality, solids content, mixing energy and existing additives.
- Screen the applicable lignosulfonate grade at several low addition levels against the control.
- Keep water and solids constant where possible so that viscosity and strength results remain comparable.
- Measure slurry behavior immediately and after the normal storage period.
- Press or extrude test pieces and evaluate green density, strength, surface quality and handling damage.
- Dry and fire under the production profile; inspect the body and surface for incomplete burnout or other defects.
- Confirm the selected condition in a controlled production trial before routine use.
Compatibility and Quality Considerations
- Color: lignosulfonates are naturally colored and may not suit white or very light bodies.
- Organic content: the firing schedule must allow suitable burnout.
- Water chemistry: hardness, pH and dissolved salts can affect dispersion.
- Other additives: test compatibility with silicates, phosphates, CMC, binders, biocides and processing aids.
- Grade consistency: review lignosulfonate content, moisture, ash, reducing sugar, sulfate, pH and insoluble matter using the agreed specification and batch COA.
Product Selection
Sodium lignosulfonate is commonly screened where water solubility and dispersion are the primary objectives. Calcium lignosulfonate can be evaluated where binding and green-body handling are important. The final decision must be based on comparable trials at equal product solids, not only on the counter-ion name.
Starting grade: sodium lignosulfonate, ceramics binder grade
| Parameter | Typical value (GAC-NaLS-Binder-P) |
|---|---|
| Appearance | Yellow-brown powder |
| Dry matter / moisture | 95% min / 5% max |
| Lignosulfonate content | 55% min |
| Water-insoluble matter | 1.5% max |
| Sulfate (SO42−) | 2–5% |
| Calcium + magnesium | 0.5% max |
| Water-reducing capacity | 8% min |
| Recommended dosage | 0.5–3% by weight of the ceramic formulation, depending on application |
Values from the current Green Agrochem TDS (Rev. 2.0). In tile bodies the lower part of the range is normally screened first for slip dispersion, and higher additions are tested where green strength is the target. Liquid grades are also available for slip and spray-dryer dosing.
