Agricultural Lignosulfonates: Use-Case & Grade Selection Matrix

Lignosulfonate used in agriculture

Purpose of this retained page: This is an application-selection matrix for buyers deciding whether an agricultural lignosulfonate should be screened for a soil, fertilizer, wetting, micronutrient, seed-treatment or farm-infrastructure formulation. Agriculture ownership and product qualification belong to ChinaLignin; this LigninCorp URL remains available because its URL-level search and backlink value has not been established.

Do not treat “agricultural lignosulfonate” as one universal grade

Counter-ion, lignosulfonate content, sugars, inorganic salts, insolubles, pH, colour, molecular-size distribution and physical form can affect compatibility and process behaviour. Crop-input use also requires composition, impurity, safety and market-specific regulatory review. An industrial binder, dust-control or construction grade must not be substituted solely because its base chemical name is similar.

Agricultural use-case qualification matrix

Proposed use Function to evaluate Critical qualification checks Correct next route
Soil-conditioner formulation Dispersion, wetting and soil-physical response support Soil texture, salinity, pH, water quality, application basis, crop safety and field control Soil-formulation resource
Fertilizer or micronutrient mixture Dispersion or complexation support Metal identity, oxidation state, competing ligands, ionic strength, precipitation, storage and nutrient analysis Metal-ion formulation resource
Wetting/spreader-sticker trial Wetting, deposition and adhesion support Active ingredient, formulation type, water hardness, droplet/coverage method, rainfastness, crop safety and label review Agricultural applications
Seed film coating, encrusting or pelleting Binder and dispersion support Seed lot, coating build, dust-off, flow, plantability, drying, germination/vigour and storage Seed-coating resource
Farm-road or yard dust control Particle binding and surface stabilization Traffic, fines, weather, runoff, corrosion, application equipment and maintenance interval Industrial dust-control guide

Dust control remains an industrial/site-management use even when the road is on a farm. It must not be presented as a crop-input recommendation or combined with foliar and soil dosage.

Exact reference grade: GAC-CaLS-AGRI

The current reference is Calcium Lignosulfonate — Agri-Grade, GAC-CaLS-AGRI, TDS Rev. 2.0. The TDS describes its listed figures as typical production values for reference; a signed shipment COA supplies batch-specific results.

Property TDS value Data type and use
Appearance Yellow-brown powder Typical identity check
pH 4–7 Typical range; confirm test basis
Dry matter 95% min Typical production limit
Water-insoluble matter 0.2% max Typical production limit
Sulphate Around 5% Typical value
Total calcium and magnesium (sulfate) 5–6% Typical range; not automatically crop-available calcium
Total NPK Around 10% Typical value; method and COA required before nutrient claims
Lignosulphonate content 60% min Typical production limit
Sugar 15% Typical value; not evidence of microbial or yield performance
Moisture 7% Typical value

Supplier-recommended starting trials

GAC-CaLS-AGRI TDS Rev. 2.0 lists 0.1–1% for wetting/spreader-sticker evaluation and a 1–3% solution for soil-conditioner evaluation. These are supplier-recommended starting trial ranges for this exact grade and stated use only. Confirm the percentage basis in writing, then optimize with the actual formulation, water, soil, crop, equipment and acceptance tests. They are not universal field rates, regulatory approvals or performance guarantees.

Legacy figures and claim status

Legacy statement Evidence/status How it is handled
10,000–40,000 Da; pH 3–11; 5% calcium; 25–30% sugars Not supported as the current exact-grade specification Retained for source recovery; do not blend with GAC-CaLS-AGRI data
Soil 0.5–2%; foliar 0.1–0.5%; dust 1–3% or 10–25% Exact grade, denominator, source and test conditions missing Not current recommendations; application types must be qualified separately
Automatic nutrient chelation, microbial stimulation, water retention, runoff reduction or crop response No exact formulation, control, method or field evidence identified Treat as test hypotheses, not promised outcomes
USDA/EU organic approval, non-toxic, zero pollution and complete biodegradability Overbroad regulatory, safety or environmental claims Require product, use, market and certifier-specific documentation

Minimum qualification programme

  1. Confirm the exact product code, lot and current TDS/SDS/signed COA.
  2. Define the application, dosage denominator, water, formulation, crop/soil and equipment.
  3. Use untreated, formulation-without-lignosulfonate and incumbent controls where applicable.
  4. Test compatibility and storage before greenhouse or field work.
  5. Measure the intended endpoint with a documented method; separately record crop safety.
  6. Review composition, impurities, label claims and approval with the relevant customer, market and certifier.
