Purpose of this retained page: This page is a quality-control and acceptance-test plan for evaluating lignosulfonate in seed film coating, encrusting and pelleting. For formulation variables and early trial design, use the seed-coating formulation and trial guide. The agriculture division and commercial continuation are on ChinaLignin.
Start with the intended coating process
Film coating, encrusting and pelleting do not impose the same binder requirement. Record the seed species and lot, seed morphology, coating build, filler, active ingredients, biological components, colourant, drying method, storage period and planter type before comparing binders. A result from one seed or coating system cannot be treated as a universal product claim.
1. Incoming binder qualification
| Check | Record | Decision use |
|---|---|---|
| Exact identity | Commercial grade, product code, lot and current TDS/SDS/COA revisions | Prevents substitution of construction, feed, dust-control or unrelated binder data |
| Physical properties | Appearance, solids or moisture, pH, solubility, insolubles and viscosity where documented | Sets preparation, filtration and drying controls |
| Impurity and regulatory review | Complete composition, relevant impurities and market/crop-use documentation | Supports customer and jurisdiction-specific acceptance |
| Batch consistency | COA results and agreed tolerances across representative lots | Separates a one-lot result from supply qualification |
No exact seed-coating-grade TDS has been identified in the current product-document set. Do not transfer specifications or dosage from a generic sodium/calcium lignosulfonate or industrial binder grade without confirming the offered grade and intended agricultural use.
2. Bench formulation controls
- Use an untreated-seed control, a coating control without the candidate binder and the incumbent-binder control where available.
- Hold seed lot, coating solids, filler and active load, liquid addition, mixing energy, application time, inlet/seed temperature and drying endpoint constant.
- Define dosage both as-supplied and on binder dry solids relative to the chosen basis; never record an unexplained percentage.
- Test addition order and premix hold time because electrolyte, pH and biological components may affect viscosity and dispersion.
- Produce enough replicate batches to distinguish formulation effects from normal coating and seed-lot variation.
3. Coating-process and mechanical acceptance
| Attribute | Useful method or observation | Acceptance question |
|---|---|---|
| Slurry handling | Viscosity versus shear/time, stability, screen residue and pump/nozzle passage | Can the formulation be applied consistently without settling or blockage? |
| Coverage and mass gain | Coating uniformity, individual/lot mass distribution and visual defects | Does the process meet the defined build and uniformity target? |
| Adhesion and dust-off | Standardized abrasion or handling test with collected mass | Does the coating remain attached through packing, transport and planting? |
| Flow and plantability | Angle of repose, bridging, singulation, skips/doubles and planter simulation | Does coating improve or impair the selected equipment? |
| Drying and redispersibility | Drying curve, final seed moisture, tack, clumping and wet disintegration | Is the balance between storage integrity and field release acceptable? |
4. Biological and storage validation
Mechanical appearance is not proof of seed safety or field value. Compare germination, emergence, abnormal seedlings and vigour using the applicable crop, market and customer methods. When pesticides, micronutrients, inoculants or beneficial microorganisms are present, test their recovery or activity separately. Repeat after accelerated and real-time storage under defined temperature and humidity, using the intended package.
Claims such as improved germination, root vigour, UV protection, slow release, zero microplastics, universal biodegradability, seamless biological compatibility or automatic organic-use acceptance require grade-specific evidence and regulatory review. They are not established merely because the material is lignosulfonate.
5. Evidence status of legacy numerical guidance
| Legacy value | Evidence/status | Public interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| 0.5–5% w/w binder concentration | Unverified—exact grade, document, revision and calculation basis not identified | Retained for source recovery only; not a supplier-recommended range |
| 3% described as ideal for heavy pelleting | Unverified—seed, filler, coating build and test method missing | Not a universal starting point or performance promise |
| 5% described as an oxygen-restriction limit | Unverified—no defined coating system or biological study | Do not use as a safety or maximum limit |
| Moisture below 7% | Ambiguous—unclear whether this refers to binder powder, coating or finished seed | Define the material, method and crop-specific storage target before use |
A numeric starting range may be restored only when a current exact-grade supplier document defines the percentage basis and application. Otherwise, establish the screening ladder from the customer’s coating solids, equipment window and biological acceptance criteria.
