Correct liquid sodium lignosulfonate dilution and dosing calculations require a clear distinction between product-as-supplied mass, solution volume, dry solids and added water. This guide explains the mass balance used during industrial trials; it does not prescribe a universal application dosage.
Four values that must not be mixed
- As-supplied mass: total mass of the liquid product.
- Solids fraction: dry solids divided by total solution mass.
- Dry-solids mass: the mass used to compare liquid and powder additions.
- Solution water: water contributed by the liquid product and included in the batch water balance.
Core calculations
Dry solids = liquid product mass × solids fraction.
Required liquid product mass = target dry-solids mass ÷ solids fraction.
Water contributed by product = liquid product mass − dry-solids mass.
Example: if a trial requires 45 kg of dry solids and the verified batch solids are 45%, the corresponding solution mass is 100 kg and it contributes approximately 55 kg of water. This demonstrates mass balance only; the appropriate target dry-solids addition must come from application testing.
Mass-to-volume conversion
Where a pump or tank is calibrated by volume, use the batch density at a defined temperature:
Volume = mass ÷ density.
Density and viscosity change with temperature and grade. Verify the lot COA or measure the actual material under controlled conditions before setting a production pump.
Preparing a diluted working solution
- Confirm the verified solids content of the received product.
- Calculate the product and water masses required for the chosen working concentration.
- Add dilution water using compatible equipment and controlled agitation.
- Add product gradually where the plant procedure requires it and avoid local concentration zones.
- Confirm homogeneity before sampling or dosing.
- Label the working tank with product code, batch, concentration, preparation date and responsible operator.
Pump calibration and trial records
- Calibrate by collected mass over time rather than relying only on a pump dial.
- Record liquid temperature, density basis and actual flow.
- Deduct product water from total batch water where applicable.
- Keep the untreated control and trial process conditions comparable.
- Report both as-supplied and dry-solids additions to prevent later conversion errors.
Current Grade One reference
The current GAC-NaLS-L Grade One TDS lists black liquid, solid content 45% min, water-insoluble matter 1% max, lignosulphonate content 50% min, reducing sugar around 7% and density 1.20–1.32 g/ml. Batch-specific values and agreed contract limits must be confirmed on the current documentation and shipment COA.
