Evaporation unit at a lignosulfonate plant

Calcium lignosulfonate can be evaluated as an organic binder for selected ceramic powders, granules and green bodies. This page focuses on binding and pre-firing strength; for slurry dispersion and the complete process, see our ceramic processing guide.

Binding Functions

  • Support particle cohesion during pressing, extrusion or granulation
  • Increase handling strength of compatible green bodies
  • Reduce chipping or loose fines where demonstrated by trials
  • Provide water-soluble binder addition through solution or controlled dry blending

Binder Trial Program

Stage Recommended checks
Mixing Distribution, solution quality, moisture and granule uniformity
Forming Compaction, release, lamination and green density
Green body Strength, edge damage, abrasion and handling
Drying Shrinkage, cracking, deformation and residual moisture
Firing Burnout, gas release, color, pinholes and final properties

Important Limitations

The product’s natural color and organic content may be unsuitable for some whiteware or tightly controlled firing systems. Excess binder or an unsuitable firing profile can contribute to defects. Determine dosage experimentally using the actual ceramic body and firing cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a calcium lignosulfonate ceramic binder?

It is a water-soluble lignosulfonate added to ceramic powders, granules or bodies to give green strength before firing. It burns out in the kiln.

How is the binder addition determined?

By trials on the actual body: measure green and dry strength, drying behaviour and fired quality at several additions. There is no universal rate.
