Calcium lignosulfonate

Calcium lignosulfonate (also spelled calcium lignosulphonate; CAS 8061-52-7) is a family of water-soluble lignin-derived calcium salts supplied in multiple grades. This short URL is maintained as a grade map and buyer routing page. For current commercial specifications, packaging, documents and quotations, use the Calcium Lignosulfonate product page.

Why grade identity matters

Commercial lignosulfonates are complex, polydisperse materials rather than one small molecule with a single molecular formula or molecular weight. Their colour, pH, solids, insolubles, sulfate, sugars, ash, calcium/magnesium profile and functional performance vary with feedstock, process, purification and grade design. A value from one grade must not be copied to another.

Industrial application selection

  • Concrete and cement: evaluate the construction grade in the actual cementitious system. Record dosage on total cementitious material and distinguish as-supplied product from dry solids.
  • Ceramics and refractories: evaluate dispersion, slurry viscosity, green strength, drying and firing response using the actual mineral body.
  • Minerals and granulation: evaluate wet and dry strength, moisture demand, compaction, abrasion and downstream processing.
  • Dust control: evaluate surface material, dilution, application rate, penetration, curing, rainfall, traffic and reapplication criteria.
  • Other dispersions: select by particle surface, pH, salts, solids, shear and storage rather than assuming one universal grade.

Legacy figures: evidence status

The former page mixed generic literature-style numbers with agricultural claims. They are retained below for traceability, but they do not describe every calcium lignosulfonate grade.

Legacy figure or claim Evidence/status Public-use decision
Molecular weight 800–10,000 Source and analytical method not supplied; commercial material is polydisperse Do not use as a universal specification
Up to 30% reducing sugars Grade not identified Use the current exact-grade TDS/COA instead
pH about 3–11 for a 1% solution Overly broad and grade-specific basis missing Use the exact-grade range and stated test concentration
1.01% calcium lignosulfonate in urea and 19.4% sulfur “wrapped” slow-release urea Original formulation, calculation basis and source not verified Not a supplier dosage or offered-grade performance claim
No poison, no residue, guaranteed soil fertility or yield benefit Unsupported absolute safety and agronomic claims Require exact SDS, regulatory review and controlled trials

Buyer checklist

  1. State the application, substrate, process and target test.
  2. Select the exact product code before comparing numbers.
  3. Request the current TDS, MSDS/SDS and signed batch COA.
  4. Confirm whether each value is a limit, range, typical result or illustrative COA value.
  5. Define any starting dosage basis and validate it in laboratory and plant trials.
  6. Confirm packaging, shelf life, MOQ, lead time, Incoterm and destination requirements.
