Sodium lignosulfonate construction-grade dosage varies by application, cement chemistry, mix design and the specific product grade. The ranges below are commonly reported starting points in the industry literature, not guaranteed performance figures for any particular product — always confirm against the current TDS for the grade being used, and validate with trial batches.
Commonly Reported Dosage Ranges
Concrete plasticizer / water reducer: commonly reported in the range of 0.2–1.0% by weight of cement. Lower addition levels are typically associated with a plasticizing effect (improved workability and flow), while higher levels within this range are more often associated with water-reducing performance. Actual water reduction depends heavily on the cement, mix design and grade, and should be confirmed by trial rather than assumed from a percentage alone.
Cement grinding aid: commonly reported in the range of 0.1–0.3% by weight of cement, used to help disperse cement particles and support grinding efficiency.
Mortar and plaster additive: commonly reported in the range of 0.5–2.0% by weight of cementitious materials, used to support workability, adhesion and water retention.
Soil stabilization: commonly reported in the range of 0.5–2.0% by weight of dry soil, used as a binding aid to help improve soil strength and stability.
Trial-Based Approach to Dosage Optimization
- Start from the supplier’s recommended screening range for the specific grade and application.
- Prepare several trial mixes across that range (e.g. three to four dosage points), keeping the water-to-cement ratio and other mix parameters constant.
- Measure fresh-concrete properties: slump or flow, air content, density and setting time.
- Measure hardened-concrete properties: compressive strength at relevant ages (e.g. 7 and 28 days), flexural strength, and durability indicators such as water permeability and shrinkage.
- Select the dosage that best balances workability, water reduction and strength development for the project’s requirements.
- Confirm the selected dosage with additional trial batches before implementing it at scale, and monitor performance during the actual project.
