What is sodium lignosulfonate used for?

Short answer: Sodium lignosulfonate is used as a dispersant, binder, mild water-reducing or set-control component, and processing aid in selected industrial formulations. The correct use depends on the grade—not simply the chemical name.

Choose by function and industrial system

Application Function to evaluate Important selection variables
Concrete and mortar Cement dispersion, water-demand and workability support, possible set control Cement chemistry, total cementitious basis, sugars, sulfate, solids, temperature and other admixtures
Ceramics and refractories Particle dispersion, slurry rheology and green-strength binding Clay/mineral type, slurry solids, pH, viscosity, drying and firing behaviour
Minerals, coal and granulation Binder or dispersing aid Particle size, moisture, binder solids, compaction, wet/dry strength and downstream process
Oilfield drilling fluids Clay dispersion and rheology support Temperature, salinity, calcium, mud type, filtration and compatibility
Dyes, pigments and industrial suspensions Wetting, dispersion and anti-settling support Particle surface, pH, electrolyte level, colour interaction and storage stability
Dust and surface stabilization Fine-particle binding and crust formation Surface material, climate, traffic, application equipment and reapplication criteria

Current grade families

Green Agrochem maintains different sodium lignosulfonate documents for construction, dispersant, binder, liquid, retarder, ceramics and dust-control grades. These grades are not interchangeable. Start with the intended function and request the current TDS, MSDS/SDS and batch COA for the exact code.

  • GAC-NaLS-Construction: construction-grade powder for concrete and cementitious formulation trials.
  • GAC-NaLS-Dispersant-P: powder dispersant grade for particle-wetting and suspension trials.
  • GAC-NaLS-Binder: binder grade for agglomeration and strength-development screening.
  • Liquid and application-specific grades: select by solids, pH, ionic profile, storage and pumping requirements.

Legacy numerical claims: evidence status

The former version included useful-looking figures without identifying an exact grade, source revision, calculation basis, control or test method. They are preserved below for traceability but are not Green Agrochem specifications or recommendations.

Legacy figure Evidence/status Required before reuse
0.5–2% of the “total mixture” in concrete Unverified and basis undefined Exact grade; total cementitious or mix basis; as-supplied or dry solids; test method
Approximately 20–26% strength increase Unverified performance claim Age, cement/mix design, dosage, control, curing and test standard
More than 14% water reduction Unverified performance claim Exact grade, workability control, mix design and test standard
15–20% three-day strength increase Unverified performance claim Mix, control, curing, dosage and compressive-strength method
Coal-water slurry: 60–75% coal, 25–40% water and 1% dispersant Illustrative formulation description; source and mass basis not verified Coal source/PSD, solids basis, dispersant grade, rheology target and source

How to establish a working dosage

Use only a supplier starting range supported by the current TDS for the exact grade and application. Define whether it is based on as-supplied product, dry lignosulfonate solids, formulation mass, binder mass or total cementitious material. Screen several levels against a control and record water quality, pH, temperature, addition sequence, processing equipment and the relevant performance method.

Buyer documentation checklist

  • Exact product code and physical form
  • Current TDS and revision/date
  • MSDS/SDS for handling, storage and transport
  • Signed batch COA rather than an illustrative template
  • Packaging, shelf life, MOQ, lead time and Incoterm
  • Sample plan and measurable acceptance criteria
