Sodium Naphthalene Formaldehyde (SNF) is a high-range water-reducing admixture, commonly known as a superplasticizer. In the global construction industry, SNF is a foundational chemical additive used to engineer high-performance concrete. How It Works: The Science of Dispersion

To understand why SNF is so critical, it helps to look at the microscopic interaction between cement and water. When mixed, cement particles naturally attract one another, forming clumps (flocculation) that trap water and reduce the mixture’s flowability.

SNF polymers attach themselves to the surface of these cement particles, introducing a strong negative electrical charge. Because like charges repel, the cement particles push away from each other.

This process, known as electrostatic repulsion, releases the trapped water and evenly disperses the cement. The result is a highly fluid, workable concrete mixture that requires significantly less added water.
