Calcium lignosulfonate is one of the oldest concrete admixture materials. It disperses cement, cuts the water a mix needs and delays setting. This page maps every construction use covered on LigninCorp, so you can go straight to the guide for your job.

How It Works in One Paragraph
Lignosulfonate molecules adsorb on cement grains and give them a negative charge, so the grains repel each other and release trapped water. The paste flows more at the same water content, or reaches the same slump with less water. The same adsorption slows early hydration, which is why it also retards set. Full mechanism: how calcium lignosulfonate works as a water reducer.

Where It Stops
- It is a normal-range water reducer; for large water cuts, it is blended with SNF or PCE (blending guide).
- Overdosing delays set beyond limits, so dose by trial.
- Oil-well cement is a separate use with its own tests (oil-well cement retarder).
Frequently Asked Questions
What is calcium lignosulfonate used for in construction?
Mainly as a normal-range water reducer and set retarder in concrete and mortar, and in cement plants as a grinding aid and raw-slurry thinner.
What is the dosage in concrete?
The GAC-CaLS-Construction TDS recommends 0.20–0.30% by weight of cement, with up to 12% water-demand reduction. Higher doses may retard set beyond specified limits.
Is it a superplasticizer?
No. It is a normal-range water reducer (ASTM C494 Type A or D). High-range products such as SNF and PCE are Type F or G. See the superplasticizer question.
Which grade is used?
The construction grade powder, or the general liquid grade at 45% solids. See the construction grade page.
